H.G. Archbishop Abune Basilyos (Basil) 6th Patriarch Elect

His Grace Archbishop Abune Basilyos (Basil) was elected to be 6th Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church!

According to the post-prayer election schedule, from the 85 votes cast by the Holy Synod, namely all members of the Holy Synod, 5 members of the Holy Synod delegation of the Coptic Orthodox Church in accordance with the protocol agreement of the two sister churches in Article 9), and representatives from the all monasteries of Eritrea. The administrative departments of the Patriarchate, representatives of local and foreign dioceses, representatives of foreign sub-dioceses, representatives of the Theological College, selection committee and sub-committees confirmed their presence, and the congregation began with an introductory process. 

After the introduction of the Holy Synod was read out to the participants, an explanation was given to the voters regarding the election process, the sovereignty of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church, the background of the Christian thrones, and the sovereignty of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church. The election of the Sixth Patriarch of Eritrea was briefly presented.

Three bishops were nominated by the executive committee. Their biographies were read in Tigrinya and English. According to the election guidelines, 85 voters were present in person and 9 voters abroad voted virtually.

After the votes were counted in front of the delegates of the Holy Synod of Egypt, Archbishop Abune Basilyos (Basil) was unanimously elected as the 6th Patriarch of the Holy Orthodox Tewahdo Church of Eritrea. The Holy Synod expressed its joy through the representative of the Holy Synod of Eritrea.

The statement of the Holy Synod announcing the election of the 6th Patriarch was read aloud and expressions of joy were sung by the delegates of the Holy Synod of Egypt while scholars of the church sang Yariedic hymns. All the participants expressed their heartfelt joy and wished the elected Blessed Abune Basilyos a long life and good health, and finally the delegates of the Coptic Holy Synod presented him with a gift from His Holiness Pope Tawadros.

The ordination ceremony of the 6th Patriarch will be held on Sunday, January 26th, 2025, at the head of Churches Saint Virgin Mary in Asmara.
